The Edgar Clerc Museum in Le Moule, Guadeloupe, is well worth a visit. It's free to visit and provides a better understanding of Guadeloupe's Amerindian history, while learning about the different pre-Columbian cultures that have existed in our archipelago.

I live in northern Grande-Terre, and I'm very happy to have this cultural institution nearby.

I'll tell you more about what to expect, whether you're going alone, as a couple, with family or friends.

📸 For further information: the photos in my article taken in July 2023 are not varied enough. I'll have to go back and take some new ones with my SLR, because on my last visit, I have to admit that the heavy July heat discouraged me from taking photos 😊 . Check out rather this video on our Instagram account to get a better idea in the meantime.

Inaugurated on August 4, 1984, the Edgar Clerc Museum is located on Route de la Rosette in Le Moule. Not far away, the Damoiseau distillery, the Damencourt surf spot or La Kaz a acras.

On arrival, a large parking area.

Inside the Edgar Clerc Museum

After walking along the pretty green avenue surrounded by trees, we arrive at the building designed by Guadeloupe architect Jack Berthelot.

The Edgar Clerc Museum, a departmental museum of Amerindian archaeology, exists thanks to donations made by Edgar Clerc. He was one of the pioneers of archaeology in Guadeloupe. Born in Martinique, he was a generous man who wanted to share his knowledge.

For example, he organized the first exhibition of pre-Columbian archaeology in Guadeloupe between February and March 1965 in Pointe-à-Pitre, and May 1965 in Basse-Terre.

Several rooms can be visited These include the reception hall, an intermediate space, rooms with highly interesting emblematic remains, a patio and even an auditorium.

The Amerindian garden

At the back of the museum, a beautiful Amerindian garden with plants. I must take the time to explore it further, ideally with a gardener-guide who is available on certain mornings.

I'll be back soon 😉 If you don't have the opportunity to come back often to visit this museum, spend some time in the Amerindian garden. The park at the front is also worth a visit, with many trees and plants to discover.

Beautiful views

I think it's the icing on the cake: the views on Petit-Canalthe bay of Le Moule and La Désirade.

My overall opinion of the Edgar Clerc Museum

The Edgar Clerc Museum is the kind of place I like to come back to again and again. There's so much to learn that one visit just isn't enough. The welcome at the museum is excellent, and I really liked the way the staff introduced us as soon as we arrived.

It's also a haven of peace at the back of the museum, with its unparalleled views. A little gem. I haven't done it yet, but as soon as I do, I'll say more about it in my article.

One thing's for sure: the Edgar Clerc Museum is free. There's no excuse to avoid it, haha 😊

The downside for visitors who can't make it on weekdays from Monday to Friday: it's closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Opening days and times

Admission is free, and the museum is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Allow around 1 hour for the visit.

Have you heard of the Edgar Clerc Museum? If so, what did you think of it?
