Where is Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe?
The island of Marie-Galante lies around forty kilometers from Pointe-à-Pitre, in the south of Grande-Terre.

Dès que vous entendrez qu’une île est appelée Grande Galette, comprenez Marie-Galante. C’est le surnom qu’elle porte du fait de sa forme circulaire et de son relief peu élevé au sud de la Guadeloupe. Vous pouvez aussi entendre ses autres surnoms l'île aux Cent Mares, the island of a hundred mills.

HOW TO GET TO MARIE-GALANTE
With the boat
The boat to Marie-Galante can be taken from 3 towns in Guadeloupe.
The boat crossing takes just one hour from Pointe-à-Pitre.

Map of Marie-Galante
Marie-Galante is divided into three communes :
- Saint-Louis
- Grand-Bourg
- Capesterre
The three communes (Capesterre, Grand-Bourg, Saint-Louis) are mainly rural, with well-preserved landscapes and moderate urbanization.
Where to sleep in Marie-Galante?
I recommend at least 2 nights for a stay in Marie-Galante. But, I know many of you can't, so feel free to pop in for a full day.
A Marie-Galante, on peut trouver des hébergements pour dormir dans ses 3 communes : Saint-Louis, Capesterre-de-Marie-Galante et Grand-Bourg. Et je trouve qu’il y a de plus en plus de jolies projets lancés que vous retrouverez on this page.
Saint-Louis lies to the west and extends to the north, Capesterre de Marie-Galante to the southeast, and Grand Bourg to the south.
You'll find plenty of restaurants in Saint-Louis and Grand Bourg.

Les hébergements les plus insolites et mignons
Depuis quelques années, j’ai eu l’opportunité de découvrir les locations/cabanes insolites de La Kabane. Au-delà du professionnalisme et de la gentillesse de son personnel, leurs cabanes sont décorées avec beaucoup de soin et garantissent un réel dépaysement.
Je vous les conseille toutes, même si ma préférée fut La Bikok à proximité du délicieux restaurant O’Vivier, avec une jolie piscine bien entretenue.

How to visit Marie-Galante
With a self-drive car rental
Do you want to be independent? Choose one of these car rentals. It's impossible to visit the whole island on foot.
Si vous venez une seule journée, pensez au temps nécessaire pour les formalités de votre location de voiture à Marie-Galante en début de journée et avant de reprendre le bateau pour la Guadeloupe Continentale ou Les Saintes. Le temps passe vite mine de rien.

With a local Marie-Galantais guide
I strongly recommend a visit to Marie-Galante with a local guide.
There's an endless amount to understand, learn and do. The local Marie-Galantais guides are friendly, ready to share many anecdotes, some of which you'd never know without them.
They'll point you in the direction of some of the must-see and, above all, unusual places. This gives you a great overview of the island. You'll also be able to take beautiful photos without worrying about the road ahead or the time to get back to the boat if you're not staying long.
De plus, vous soutenez encore plus l’économie locale. Vous pouvez aussi en trouver un sur place à l’arrivée, mais selon le flux de visiteurs, cela peut être très vite complet et selon les guides, l’expérience n’est pas aussi bonne.

L'Habitation Murat
The island of Marie-Galante is rich in historical relics from its slave-owning and colonial past. L'Habitation Murat in Grand-Bourg is one of them.
Before 1665, it was one of the island's very first sugar mills. In 1819, Dominique Murat and his son Dominique-Emmanuel bought the dwelling. By 1839, when Dominique-Emmanuel died, the dwelling was thriving, with over 300 slaves.
In 1979, it became home to the Marie-Galante Ecomuseum, a must-see. Habitation Murat is also home to one of the few beast mills in Guadeloupe.

Gueule Grand Gouffre
This is one of Marie-Galante's most beautiful natural wonders. Gueule Grand Gouffre is in Saint-Louis, with a very small path to enjoy the views. And even though I've been back to this spot many times, the effect is still there.

The windmills of Marie-Galante
A ne pas louper sur les routes de Marie-Galante : ses moulins, pour plusieurs intacts. Ce n’est pas pour rien que son surnom est aussi l’île aux cent moulins. 😜
Parmi les plus beaux moulins de l’île, je peux dire sans hésitation the Roussel-Trianon home.
There are many anecdotes to learn about the island, including slavery, sugar cane cultivation (over three centuries old for the history of the Marie-Galantaise sugar industry) and its impact on the island, and the formation of its villages.
That's why this local guide is definitely a recommendation to consider.

I don't drink alcohol (yes, really ), but I do recommend that you take the time to visit the distilleries on Marie-Galante. I enjoyed spending time with several employees to better understand the manufacturing process.
I'm not telling you anything new when I say that Marie-Galante rum is considered one of the best in the world.

Hiking in Marie-Galante
Several trails cross parts of the island. These include the Vieux-Fort trail, which forms a beautiful loop from Anse Canot beach.

By staying longer on the island, you'll be supporting local businesses and reducing your carbon footprint.
The economic consequences of the health crisis have been disastrous, and as you know, the tourism industry is an invaluable resource for the people of Marie-Galant.

The Terre de Blues festival is a major musical event held every year in Guadeloupe. It features blues music in all its variations, with a strong Afro-Caribbean influence.

Bathing on one of our heavenly beaches
What's not to love about lounging on one of its pretty beaches of fine white sand? The water is magnificent, turquoise and transparent. Most of the beaches are located in the commune of Saint-Louis.
There are hidden corners, so much less crowded than the resorts of Grande-Terre, and lots of wild beaches.
Let's hope this limited urbanization continues for a long time to come.

Last time, I still loved my interactions: for example, this moment with the fishermen who talk passionately about their trade. Or the farmer who is deeply involved in sugar cane issues.
